Exhibitions Spotlight: Land and Nature
Each month, we bring you a selection of UK exhibitions on similar themes. This
month we look at how museums and galleries are drawing attention to the legacies of
Land Ant and the way nature impacts on art.
Emerging in the 1960s and 1970s, Land Art invites artists to create work situatedwithin the landscape and use natural materials Originating in America, it later becamepopular in Britain. Artists like Richard Long and Andy Goldsworthy inspire people toreconsider human-nature relations. Today, many artists draw inspiration from natureto reflect on issues such as pollution, climate change and land use.
Briefintroductions
Andy Goldsworthy | Fify Years is the artist’s largest indoor display, with morethan 200 works. Goldsworthy is good at using natural materials such as clay, leavesand stones. Visitors can view records of Goldsworthy’s 50-year creative career in the
downstairs galleries.
Millet: Life on the Land is held to mark the 150th anniversary of French artist
Jean-Frangois Millet’s death. It features his realistic and poetic paintings ofcountryside labourers, such as farmers and shepherds (A).
After Nature is set against the background of environmental crisis. It bringstogether artists using natural materials and exploring the complex relationshipbetween art and technology.
